Lady's Island's Only Walk-Up Kayak Launch Just Closed. Here's Where the Water Access Actually Went.

"After 16 incredible years of sharing adventures in the Lowcountry, it's time to say goodbye."

That's how Tim Lovett told Lady's Island the story was ending. Higher Ground Outfitters, the outdoor shop tucked into 95 Factory Creek Court, closed for good on May 31 after nine years on the island and 16 in business overall. It started small in a corner of Beaufort Town Center back in 2010, moved to Lady's Island in 2017, and became the kind of place where you could rent a kayak, carry it about 100 feet, and be paddling on Factory Creek before you'd even worked up a sweat. That distance is the whole story. On an island where most of the shoreline sits behind private docks or gated communities, a spot where a total stranger could show up, rent a boat, and be on the water in under two minutes was rare enough to matter.

It's gone now, and it closed during the same stretch of 2026 that Lady's Island Marina, a few hundred yards down the same creek, was pouring money into new docks and a remodeled lounge. On paper that sounds like a wash. One waterfront business closes, another one upgrades. In practice, they were never serving the same person, and understanding that difference is the whole point of this post.

What Made Higher Ground Different Wasn't the Gear

Beaufort has other places to buy a paddle or a life vest. What Lady's Island didn't have anywhere else was a walk-up rental counter sitting on the water itself. Higher Ground's owner built the shop around exactly that idea: no boat trailer, no slip fee, no membership, just gear you could rent by the hour and a launch point close enough to see from the register. For a renter without their own kayak, that's the difference between an afternoon paddle and a full logistics project.

That model is genuinely hard to replace, because it depends on controlling both the retail counter and the shoreline next to it. Most of Factory Creek's bank belongs to either the marina or private residential lots. Losing the one business that held both pieces together doesn't just remove a store from a strip mall. It removes the only casual, no-boat-required route onto that stretch of water.

The Marina's Upgrade Is Real, and It's Aimed at a Different Customer

None of this is a knock on Lady's Island Marina, which has genuinely invested in itself this year. The marina, at 73 Sea Island Pkwy, put real money into rebuilding its docks and reopening a remodeled gathering space it named Jackie Ford's Captains Lounge, after the marina's original dockmaster. Boaters who stopped in through the spring and summer described new docks, fresh power pedestals, and a lounge finally back open after months of work. One boater passing through mid-2026 guessed the renovation would be finished by the end of that summer, which puts full completion right around now.

That's a meaningful upgrade for anyone who already owns a boat or keeps a slip there. It does nothing for a Lady's Islander who wants to paddle for an afternoon and doesn't own a kayak. The marina rents dock space, not gear. Its improvements make life better for the boating community that was already using Factory Creek. They don't reopen the door Higher Ground closed.

What Factory Creek Actually Offers Now

Here's the practical version, broken down by what each spot on this stretch of water can and can't do for you today.

Access Point What It Offers What You Need to Bring
Higher Ground Outfitters Closed permanently as of May 31, 2026 N/A
Lady's Island Marina Slips, courtesy car and bikes, Jackie Ford's Captains Lounge, on-site dining A boat, or a reservation as a marina guest
County EZ Launch dock, Factory Creek Free kayak and canoe launch, no rentals on-site Your own kayak or canoe
Brickyard Point Public paddling launch on the Beaufort River side of the island Your own kayak or canoe

The pattern is plain enough once you lay it out. Every remaining option on this list assumes you already own a boat. If you don't, and you didn't rent one before Higher Ground closed, there's currently no storefront on Lady's Island where you can walk in and walk out with a kayak in your hands. The county's launch dock has been sitting on Factory Creek since 2019, quietly doing its job, but it was never built to hand you a boat, only to let you put one in.

A Full Paddling Season Without It

Higher Ground's closing sale ran through the last weekend of May, right as the water was warming up for the season locals actually use it most. That means this past summer, the first one since 2017, went by without a walk-up rental counter on the island. By the time the fall paddling window opens back up over the next few weeks, with cooler air and the marsh grass turning that late-season gold along Factory Creek, anyone without their own boat will be planning a trip to Beaufort's mainland outfitters instead of a five-minute drive across the bridge.

That's not a crisis. It's a genuine change in how the island functions day to day, and it's worth knowing before you find yourself standing at 95 Factory Creek Court on a Saturday morning, gear-less, staring at a building for lease.

The Rest of the Trip Still Works

None of this touches the parts of a Lady's Island outing that never depended on Higher Ground. If you bring your own kayak and put in at the county's Factory Creek dock or Brickyard Point, you can still end the trip the same way locals always have, with dinner on the water. Dockside Restaurant sits right on Factory Creek with views of the Woods Memorial Bridge and downtown Beaufort across the water, and The Fillin' Station, just up from the marina, has a covered deck built for exactly the kind of evening where you're still a little damp from the water and don't feel like going home yet. Those spots didn't change. The water didn't change. What changed is the step right before you get in the boat.

If you're the kind of Lady's Islander who paddled on a whim because Higher Ground made it easy, this fall is the season to either buy your own gear or plan ahead with a mainland outfitter before you head out. The creek is exactly as good as it's always been. Getting onto it just takes a little more planning than it used to.

Lady's Island has a way of absorbing change like this without losing what makes it feel like Lady's Island, the quiet mornings on Factory Creek, the two bridges that make the whole place feel like its own small town. This is one more shift in a place that's had plenty of them, and it's the kind of local detail that's easy to miss unless you're paying close attention to the island day to day.
